What step occurs in Meiosis1, that does NOT occur in Meiosis 2?
DNA replication occurs in the interphase preceding meiosis I and does not occur at any other stage in meiosis.
In Prophase 1 of Meiosis 1, crossing over occurs between homologous chromosomes in which there is an exchange of genetic material between the homologous chromosomes. In Meiosis 2, it's similar to mitosis and the sister chromatids separate to form 4 haploid daughter cells.
Another key point to remember about Meiosis 1 is that in: Prophase 1 : Crossing over happens. Metaphase 1 : Homologous chromosome (not sister chromatids/chromosome) line up at the equator in the form of tetrads. Anaphase one : homologous chromosome separate, not the sister chromatids, and the centromere doesn't divide.
