What they're basically asking you to do is write about a time where you faced a problem or challenge, and then tell how you overcame it.

A metaphor door can be an obstacle as boredninja said. It can be open or locked. It can be opened or closed by you or yourself. Say for example, you got stuck on a question (like this) and then someone pointed out what you were actually meant to do - and got you thinking in the right direction). 

That gives you the key to unlock the door (and to overcome the problem). =D
