Which of these is not a rational number? square root of 1, 9, 10, or 4? Help please.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Take the square root of 1, what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm, 1?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, so \[\Large \sqrt{1}\] is rational

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this is because the result is a whole number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for helping!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do the same with the other numbers, if you get a decimal answer (that goes on forever), then the number isn't rational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{10}= 3.16 \] so its not rational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kay. Thanks.
