Explain why the steps for solving equations are usually given as removing grouping symbols first, even though it is not necessarily the only way to solve. For example, the equation 2(x + 3) = 16 could be solved by dividing the equation through by 2 to get x + 3 = 8.

it depends on how you see it though, some might find it harder to do the "simplified" way and they tend to expand the equation to have a better picture. But some might see clearer when the equation is factorized.
