The problem is punctuation rules for quoting statement are not consistent. If someone makes a statement, it should end with a period. Every sentence should end with a period no matter what.

For instance, if he asked a question rather than make a statement, it should be:

"Am I the greatest?", asked the famous boxer Muhammad Ali. "I asked that even before I knew I was."
