Actually, I take that back. None of them are correct and you could make the argument that any of them are close.

The problem is punctuation rules for quoting statement are not consistent. If someone makes a statement, it should end with a period. Every sentence should end with a period no matter what. For instance, if he asked a question rather than make a statement, it should be: "Am I the greatest?", asked the famous boxer Muhammad Ali. "I asked that even before I knew I was."

That makes even more sense, with consistency from the last sentence I created.
