It actually depends on what basis you characterize them .. Types i am familiar with are Successive Approximation Converter,Dual Slope Integrating Converter, Charge Balancing Converter,Flash Converter,Sigma-Delta Converter .. all of these types have their trade off like response time,accuracy and noise immunity and considerably the resolution .
