how do i solve 2y + x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2t+x is all i have

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is alg 1

OpenStudy (precal):

usually when you are told to solve, you have an equation, then we would see an equal sign, what are your exact instructions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for 2x+x

OpenStudy (precal):

3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry it was 2x+y

OpenStudy (precal):

we are not solving, this is combining like terms, they are the same (ie both have an x) so we just add them together imagine x is a car 2x +x = 3x 2 cars + 1 car = 3 cars ok so you say 2x+y well since they are different variables (ie letters) we can not put them together x is cars y is a cat we do not have 3 cars or 3 cats just 2 cars and 1 cat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 2x+y 2*1x+1y 2+1=3?

OpenStudy (precal):

no, not unless you were told x=1 and y=1
