^^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

major axis = 5*2 = 10 minor axis = 4*2 = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first is sprt(25)*2=10; sce is sqrt(16)*2=8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For general eqn of ellipse x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 = 1 here if a>b, then major axis is along x-axis and minor axis along y-axis... You can see how this eqn. relates to the graph by putting x=0 and calculating y and vice versa... on putting x=0, we get y = + or - b , which is 2 points (0,b) and (0,-b), clearly these are on y-axis, hence minor axis length becomes 2*b.... Similarly major axis length is 2*a If b>a, then by similar arguments, you get minor axis as 2*a and major axis as 2*b

OpenStudy (phi):

the major semi-axis is the larger of the two in the equation for an ellipse \[ \frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} =1 \] a and b are the axes. the larger is the semi-major and the other the semi-minor so take the square root of the denominators.
