At the bookstore, 40 copies of a popular paperback book fit perfectly on a 5-foot shelf. How many copies of this book would fit perfectly on an 8-foot shelf?

OpenStudy (sburchette):

We have been told that 5ft of shelving can hold 40 copies. If you divide the number of copies by the length of the shelf, you will get how many copies 1ft of shelving will hold. 40/5=8 So 1 ft of shelving will hold 8 copies. If you have 8 ft, then 8 feet * 8 copies per foot=64 copies total.
