Research has shown people will have elevated levels of a certain protein when they have a bacterial infection. In comparison, when people have a viral infection the same protein appears in trace amounts. Once a blood test is done the level of protein can be determined in about an hour.

Why would it be beneficial to know if a person with a respiratory infection has elevated levels of this protein in his or her blood?
