Suppose a building inspector orders the height of a ceiling to be 8 feet tall, but the workers buy lumber that is only 50 centimeters tall. How many pieces of lumber will they have to stack to create an 8-foot ceiling? Explain your answer. (Hint: 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you could start by converting the 8 foot ceiling to centimeters, you can easily do this like this 1ft=12in so 8(12)=96 inches then you could convert to cm 1in=2.54cm so (96)(2.54)=243.84cm since have 50cm pieces of lumber, divide 243.84cm by 50cm 243.84/50=4.8768 because it is a decimal, you should round up, since the pieces are only 50cm so you would need 5 pieces of 50cm lumber

OpenStudy (ars22):

12 in. in a ft TIMES 8 ft EQUALS 96 in. 96 in. TIMES 2.54 cm. EQUALS 243.84 cm. 243.84 cm. DIVIDED BY 50 cm. blocks EQUALS 4.8768 4.8768 ROUNDS UP to 5 blocks Thes answer is 5
