Which of the following is a reason why cells divide? A. to maintain a surface area large enough to support their cytoplasm B. to mutate their DNA C. to increase the volume of their cytoplasm D. to decrease their amount of RNA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A.) Because, when they divide, their volume decreases, as a result enabling the cell to obtain enough nutrients and expel enough wastes.

I agree with Ashley16, but would say that it's mainly the organism's ability to maintain a manageable surface area, not the volume, though the two tend to be positively correlated.
