A student is taking a standardized test consisting of multiple choice questions for which there are five options for each question. Five points are awarded for each correct answer, but the student loses 2 points for an incorrect answer. Questions left blank neither receive nor lose points. What is the minimum number of options that the student should be able to rule out before making a guess on any particular question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A Two B None C One D Three

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it c? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe so because the student should be able to guess at any time, without ruling out any of the answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My bad B, none.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, it should be none I think.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the student should not be able to rule out any number of options before making a guess.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@apoorvk to the rescue lol. Let him verify it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha!

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

If he is making a 'guess', then 'C'. You don't really need to rule out any option if it's a guess. However to be sure of an answer, you need to rule out the 4 wrong options (which is not what they are asking here).

The next question is almost exactly the same too :/ A student is taking a standardized test consisting of multiple choice questions for which there are five options for each question. Ten points are awarded for each correct answer, but the student loses 2 points for an incorrect answer. Questions left blank neither receive nor lose points. What is the minimum number of options that the student should be able to rule out before making a guess on any particular question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, so I was right, phew**

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

OOP!! "NONE'' would be *B*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, so B right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes B

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Right, I mean that's for the first question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YEAHH!!!! I did it! haha *does math dance* lol!

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

LOoolllLLL :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about that second one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should be none as well? the only difference is that ten points are awarded for a correct answer in that question and yet again no ruling out of any answer is required for guessing.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Same same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's dumb. frikken giving me another 'exact' question. pshh waste of my time lol! JK;) thanks guys!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yeh lol, no problem, credits to apoorvk for helping me verify what I thought was wrong.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

No no, credit to you two only :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope you verified;D
