How did Rome become important in the Catholic Church?

By being the most important city in the world when Christianity was founded in Palestine (within the boundaries of the Empire) in the early 1st century AD. "All roads lead to Rome," they said, so it was inevitable that any religion that attempted to be more than a regional cult within the Empire would see Rome as very important.
