Maj. George Armistead wanted a huge flag made so the british could see it from really far away. They asked Mary Young Pickersgill and her daughter to make a flag, so they cut 15 stars that were 2 feet point to point. Then 8 red and 7 white stripes that were 2 feet wide and by the end it was a 30 by 42 foot flag. After a bunch of fighting Key saw the flag still flying and the anthem was born.
