you said 3 students are on both teams, subtract 3 from 8 and 12. you get 5 students on the curling team ONLY and 9 students on the badminton team ONLY. add them up, 9+5 = 14, then you add 3 to that because you said 3 students are on both teams. (you subtracted 3 earlier, hence you add it back here)
