There are 8 students on the curling team and 12 students on the badminton team. What is the total number of students on the two teams if three students are on both teams?

OpenStudy (theviper):

I think 14.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you get that?

OpenStudy (theviper):

Is this correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

total # = 17 you said 3 students are on both teams, subtract 3 from 8 and 12. you get 5 students on the curling team ONLY and 9 students on the badminton team ONLY. add them up, 9+5 = 14, then you add 3 to that because you said 3 students are on both teams. (you subtracted 3 earlier, hence you add it back here)
