How do I evaluate in the real number system, and is this possible? Why or why not? (-9)^1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no... because this expression is equivalent to taking the square root of a negative number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it's not like: \[(^{2}\sqrt{-9})\] \[= ^{2}-\sqrt{9} = -3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no... because (-3)(-3) = 9, not -9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh!! okay thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer to this comes from the complex numbers.. the real numbers is only a subset of complex numbers...

yw...:)
