@scherniak is right. I'll just justify his or her answer. Let's assume that upwards is + & downwards is - (this is going to be our sign convention) Ftens = + 1200 N (the + indicates the direction, which is positive in this case because of sign convention) Fgrav = - 800 N (similarly, the - indicates the direction, which is negative in this case) Fnet = + 1200 N - 800 N = + 400 N
