4x-32y over 4??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Start by dividing each term by 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay and then what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Put them back together. So 4x/4 - 32y/4 =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7.75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite. 4x/4 = x and 32y/4 = 8y. So you put them together to give you...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well 4x/4 is 1x and then 32/4 is 8 and so 8+1=9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't get rid of the x and the y like that. You simply have to leave them there, unless you know what x and y are.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 9xy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Still no. 4x/4 - 32y/4 = x - 8y Do you see why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah i do thanks (:
