Parabolas - y=(x+4)^2+5. Thanks in advance c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes... that is a parabola...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you just need confirmation on what graph that expression is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I don't know how to do it :s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I should of clarified.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whts the query?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I feel your pain im doing the same thing, but what formula are they asking you for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uhm, we have to draw a bunch of parabolas on paper in order to make the picture. The question just says - a) y=(x+4)^2+5 , y < (or equal to) 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because the square term is positive, the parabola opens upward.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I know that much xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When x=-4, y=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when x=0, y=21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but how did you get that :s?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug x=0 in the eqn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The min value of y is 5, which occurs at x=-4, so -4,5 is the vertex of the parabola

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the minimum value of y is 5 because that is the constant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

essentially yes..but see y= something squared + 5 the minimum value of something squared is zero...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so thats y the min vl is 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh, right. I see c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now u know how to plot it?
