I highly suggest looking up Moodle & Blackboard, as they are two major systems currently in use (although, I consider them outdated compared to more modern systems).  Check out what functionality those two have!

A few functions that come to mind:
-Discussion boards
-Peer2Peer & Peer2Student messaging
-News/Announcement
-File/Assignment/Class material hosting
-Grade posting
