There are a lot of ways are the same as we learning English.
Movies, songs, textbooks, magazines...etc are helpful I think.
I may not tell you how to learn it since I was born in this surrounding.

Mandarin is different from Latin, it is compose of many "characters", not ABCDEFG...only.
Mandarin can be learned more easily with Roman alphabet, though the crucial way is knownig Phonetic(ㄅㄆㄇㄈㄉㄊㄋㄌㄍㄎㄏㄐㄑㄒㄓㄔㄕㄖㄗㄘㄙㄚㄛㄜㄝㄞㄟㄠㄡㄣㄤㄥㄧㄨㄩ).

If you need some elementary textbooks, I can send you some that international students in Taiwan use.
