What makes news different from other types of communication?

Most communication is intended to entertain, or to convey feelings, opinions, or convince the recipient of something. News is *supposed* to report factual events, as they occur if possible, in a way that informs. That is why so much that is called news these days is not, in fact, news but might be rather classed as entertainment or opinion, or even outright propaganda.
