Make a comparison ??? To mail an envelope first class costs $0.34 for the first ounce, plus $0.17 for each additional ounce. The cost to mail an envelope was $1.53. 8 ounces weight of the envelope which one is bigger 8 ounce or weight of envolope

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

first work out the weight of the envelope from the information given to you.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

you are told that it cost $1.53 in total so first subtract $0.34 for the first ounce to get $1.53 - $0.34 = $1.19 then you know the rest of the weight of the envelope was charged at $0.17 per ounce so divide $1.19 by $0.17 to get the remaining weight of the envelope

mathslover (mathslover):

have u got that @anum93 .... asnaseer sir explained right... do u have any more problem than ask

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so tell me which one is bigger weight or 8 ounce???

mathslover (mathslover):

may i know what did u try ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when 1.19 divide by 0.17 we get 7 ounce and when we add 0.34 for ist ounce we get 7.34 which i think is total weight . so in my view 8 ounce is greater than weight . but where i see the answer is that both weight and 8ounce are equal

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

almost - 7 ounces is correct. however we subtracted $0.34 for the first ounce. so total weight = 7 + 1 = 8 ounces

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

remember up there I said: so first subtract $0.34 for the first ounce to get $1.53 - $0.34 = $1.19 so you need to add 1 ounce for the $0.34 charge. you incorrectly added 0.34 instead of adding 1.

okthanks
