Each photon carries a lot more energy, so when it is absorbed, it can produce a wider range of chemical reactions, some of which are unusual and generate strange and reactive products, which go on to do more strange chemistry, thus disrupting the ordinary orderly chemical reactions going on in living tissue. If you mean harmful to nonliving things, then that energy can break chemical bonds and disrupt the integrity of materials, too.
