Find the quotient and remainder if f(x) is divided by p(x). \[f(x)=2x^4-x^3-3x^2+7x-12\]; \[p(x)=x^2-3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I complete the polynomial p(x) to x^2+0x-3?

OpenStudy (callisto):

2x^2 - x +3 ------------------------ x^2 -3 ) 2x^4 - x^3 - 3x^2 + 7x -12 2x^4 - 6x^2 ------------------------ -x^3 + 3x^2 + 7x -x^3 + 3x ---------------------- 3x^2 + 4x -12 3x^2 -9 -------------- 4x - 3

OpenStudy (callisto):

You should be able to find the quotient and remainder now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did you do?

OpenStudy (callisto):

Long division...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't see it... I can't understand how you set it up

OpenStudy (callisto):

---- p(x) ) f(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry but I don't understand that... I don't know if it's easier but you can just tell me if p(x) has to be x^2+0x-3 to be divided by the polynomial.

OpenStudy (callisto):

you may say so.

Okay, I don't know if it's this computer or what but Thank you so much!!!

OpenStudy (callisto):

Welcome!

Haha, I can see it now... I knew it was something wrong with the computer I was on!! I understand what you did now :). I got the same thing.
