why was unicode invented?
The old system, ASCII, was no where near large enough to deal with all the different languages & symbols that exist. It designed by English speakers and was relatively primitive, as it was all the hardware could really handle at the time. Unicode has been around for a long time and there have been many iterations of it to accommodate the vast number of symbols used worldwide.
