Tangent of angle = 2.5 What is the angle? And how do I get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take inverse tangent of 2.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so angle = tan^-1(2.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks. What's tan^-1? Is that (tan2.5)^-1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it tan^(-1*82.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's that notation for tan inverse it should look like that on your calculator a tan^-1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that negative one exponent throws a lot of people off, so just use the "arctan" notation So you want to find arctan(2.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^ good thinking

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the tan^-1 notation is a bit confusing - all it means is ' the angle whose tangent is 2.5' the alternative is arctan which gives sounds like an angle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

your calculator might not have the "arctan" button, so look for the \[\Large \tan^{-1}\] button

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

you also have arcsin and arccos

Thanks everyone!
