In Oswald Avery's experiments, the destruction of which of the following finally blocked the deadly bacterial transformation? A. Carbohydrates B. DNA C. Lipids D. Proteins

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B DNA because bacterial transformation takes place because of DNA

Hey @kicksnckicks. The bacterial transformation was shown by Griffith's experiment with strains of Pneumococcus. Following his experiments he concluded that some 'principle' was transferred from the heat-killed S to the R strain. From your knowledge of biology, what according to you is that molecule which is responsible for carrying genetic material? Let's continue to find out, Avery and his colleagues were interested in the transforming principle. So they took blood sample with the strains R and S, and carried out several biochemistry experiments. Following these experiments, they find out that it was neither the sugar coat nor the protein present that were responsible for the transformation. It dawned to them that it could be the nucleic acids. It should be noted that at that time the nucleic acids were considered to be boring molecules as they contained the same nucleoside and just four different nitrogeneous bases. So, they purified the nucleic acids and removed the RNA using RNase and tested it's transforming-ability. What they found is that the DNA transformed the bacteria. And this was their conclusion.
