I need to build a go kart. So what parts do I need and what do they do?

your basics will include

chasis, front and rear axle, 4 wheels, a seat, a steering wheel connected to the front axle, and some sort of braking organization.

Well for that u need, following things..
1. Engine/ Motor - Heart of the system as a power source.
2. Axles and Tyres - TO run on the streets.
3. Gear box- Reduce and transfer power to Axles and tyres.
4. Brakes and Clutch - To stop when required without stopping the source.
5. Chassis - Its basically a structure on which everything is supported. It should be designed to sustain load.
6. And other accessories, like Steering, seat , speedometer , shock absorbers.. etc...
