Your piggy bank has a total of 46 coins in it; some are dimes and some are quarters. If you have a total of $7.00, how many quarters and how many dimes do you have?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Let d = number of dimes and q = number of quarters. We know we have 46 coins so\[d+q=46\]

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

The sum of the number of coins times their respective worth totals $7.00 so 0.10d+0.25q=7.00

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Solve the first equation for d (or q) and substitute into second equation.
