what must you do to determine whether or not a solution is an extraneous solution?

Parth (parthkohli):

You just plug in the value of the variable obtained in that equation. Okay?

Parth (parthkohli):

And if it doesn't satisfy, then it is an extraneous solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i thought just wasnt sure how to put into word.. thank! :)

Parth (parthkohli):

You're welcome!

Parth (parthkohli):

And, welcome to OpenStudy :) can you read this? http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct

Parth (parthkohli):

This is not a rule-free site, yet it's a free site! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you plug in values of a variable and the answer turns out that the left side is not equal to the right side, then it is not a solution. However, if you substitute the values and the equation becomes imaginary or undefined, then it is an extraneous root

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you, i just kind of stumbled upon it. But very much looking forward to using it more often

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah! and yes, ive read the rules.. thank you.
