As a diver swims deeper underwater, the water pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI) increases on the diver. WATER PRESSURE DEPTH (IN FEET) 10 20 30 40 50 PRESSURE (IN PSI) 4.3 8.6 12.9 17.2 21.5 What equation represents p and the function of d? a. p=4.3d b. p=0.43d c. p=23.3d d. p=2.33d

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Do you have any idea where to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no... :(

OpenStudy (shane_b):

You can do several ways...but sometimes the best way is to just graph it like this. Then you can just calculate the slope of the line.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Of course, on a multiple choice test you can often do things more quickly by just plugging in the answers to see if they work. If you do that, you'll see that answer b is the only one which works for all values of depth. For example, to check "a" to see if it works with a depth of 10ft:\[p=4.3d=4.3(10ft)=430PSI\] So obviously that answer doesn't work with a depth of 10ft.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

To add on to the last part, that answer doesn't work because it doesn't match what the pressure should be at 10ft which was 4.3PSI.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would the answer be B then? p = 0.43d?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Yes...try it using each depth and you will see that the answers you get will match what the pressures should be at those depths.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I did, thankfully. And thank you so much for helping me! :)

OpenStudy (shane_b):

np, good luck !
