Select the exact value of cot -pi/3. How do I go about this since it's asking for cotangent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

cot(x) = cos(x)/sin(x) Do you know cos(-pi/3) and sin(-pi/3) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For cos it's 1/2 and for sin it's sqrt(3)/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both negative, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would it be cot = (1/2) / (sqrt(3)/2)

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

sin is positive in 1st and 2nd quadrant cos is positive in 1st and 4th quadrants try now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cot = (1/2) divided by negative sqrt(3)/2 ? (:

OpenStudy (aliahmed):

the correct is the b or 2 which =-√3 /3

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could I just type this into the calculator? (: And thank you @aliahmed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got -0.5773... which is -sqrt(3)/3, yeah? (:

OpenStudy (aliahmed):

yup

OpenStudy (foolaroundmath):

yep that is correct. (1/2)/(-sqrt(3)/2) = -1/sqrt(3) = -sqrt(3)/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome, thank you both (:

OpenStudy (aliahmed):
