a very common example is postage...:
if x represents the weight of a package in ounces and y represents cost for postage then:
0 <= x <= 1, cost = .50 dollar
1 <= x < 2 , cost = 1.00 dollar
2 < = x < 3 , cost = 1.50 dollars,
etc....
