Sounds are made when objects vibrate. The vibration makes the air around vibrate, and the air vibrations enter your ear which you hear as a sound.
more strain means more vibrations rapid to ad fro about their mean position
in other words the already existing distubance is more pronounced

To elaborate a bit further, loosening the drum skin will cause the frequency of oscillations of the skin to drop (wavelength gets longer). Pitch in music is essentially a measure of the frequency.
