What would a drummer do to make the sound of a drum give a note of lower pitch?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Loosen the drum skin.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

losen the drum skin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tight skin will make the skin molecule undergo strain and when u hit that further disturbance between the molecules corresponds to higher pitch....u might want to google it out though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sounds are made when objects vibrate. The vibration makes the air around vibrate, and the air vibrations enter your ear which you hear as a sound. more strain means more vibrations rapid to ad fro about their mean position in other words the already existing distubance is more pronounced

OpenStudy (shane_b):

To elaborate a bit further, loosening the drum skin will cause the frequency of oscillations of the skin to drop (wavelength gets longer). Pitch in music is essentially a measure of the frequency.
