Not true. Tattoos and body modifications are probably as old as humans have been humans. Body modifications are used to express tribal affiliations, accomplishments, and many other external manifestations of human experiences. Calling something a fad is away to denigrate it, to mark the behavior as out-group to the group in which the speaker feels they belong.

It seems like everyone has a tattoo these days. What used to be the property of sailors, outlaws, and biker gangs is now a popular body decoration for many people. And it's not just anchors, skulls, and battleships anymore — from school emblems to Celtic designs to personalized symbols, people have found many ways to express themselves with their tattoos.

If you have such a short view of history and human behavior, then pants are also a fad. They used to be only for peasants, then only for men, and now everyone is wearing them. Really, such a fad. We'll all go back to gowns and surcoats soon. Humans modify and decorate their bodies, across cultures, across millennia. Blackberries are a fad, bright and shiny and everyone had one, until the iphone and android did'em in. The novel, as an art form, is a fad, stretching from the advent of the printing press to our ability to make reliable and inexpensive audio/visual recordings and now the novel fades away, just a fad. Ten thousand years from now, when people have forgotten where Earth is, have thought up new gods and English is more distant than whatever the makers of Stone Henge spoke, we'll still be inking and piercing our bodies, hanging gold from our ears and putting swirls of defiance across our cheeks. It's just a deeply human behavior. The internal combustion engine is more of a fad.
