two pipes a and b can fill a cistern in 24 and 32 minutes respectively. they started to fill a cistern together, but B is turned off after a few mintues and A fills the rest of the cistern. if total time taken is 18 minutes, after how many minutes is tap B turned off ?

Pipe A can fill the cistern in 24 minutes so in 1 minute it fills 1/24 of the cistern and in 18 minutes it fills 18/24 =3/4 of the cistern. That means that 1/4 of the cistern was filled by Pipe B. If Pipe B can fill 1 entire cistern in 32 minutes, it can fill 1/4 cistern in 8 minutes so it was turned off after 8 minutes.
