why are neutrons more effective as nuclear bullets than protons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plz help me 4 zis question..

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

tell me first difference between them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one is positively charge i.e proton and one is neutral i.e neutron

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaa therefore in nuclear reaction neutron is not attracted by its surrounding !!!as result it can penetrate further before colliding with other particle!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok....thnks

Protons are positively charged, so they are very strongly repulsed by nuclei. You need to fire them at the nucleus with great velocity to overcome the repulsion. On the other hand, a neutron is neutral, and has no repulsion from the nucleus.
