HELP :) what is the effect of suspending the cells in HYPOTONIC, HYPERTONIC , and ISOTONIC environment ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if a cell is placed in a liquid that's isotonic to it, then nothing will happen. If it's placed in a liquid that's hypertonic to it, then the liquid will enter the body of the cell. And if the cell is placed in the hypotonic liquid, then the liquid will "sucks" the cell's liquid out.

Ayusukma is correct: there is a concentration gradient of water molecules between the environments inside the cell and outside it. If there is a higher concentration gradient of water outside the cell than inside it, water will diffuse into the cell faster than it diffuses out and there will be a net increase in water molecules inside the cell. And vice versa if there are fewer water molecules in the solution outside the cell than in it.
