There were 150 freshman and sophomores at the high school musical Reese and her friends attended. Freshman tickets were $2.00 each and sophomore tickets were $3.00 each. The receipts for freshman and sophomore tickets totaled $400. How many sophomores bought tickets?

First step to any word problem like this? Represent your values :) If x = number of sophomores that bought tickets what would represent the number of freshmen who bought tickets?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

If x sophomores bought tickets and the total number of freshmen and sophomores with tickets was 150, the number of freshmen who bought tickets must be (150 - x). Can you form an equation with the total value of x sophomore tickets plus the total value of (150 - x) freshmen tickets equals $400 ?
