how does a scientific theory differ from a scientific law?

A scientific theory starts with a question, and then a hypothesis. The theory is then formed through repeated experimentation and analysis. In short, a theory is an EXPLANATION of how nature works. A scientific law does not give an explanation of why something works. It gives you a fact, based on observation. But it does not answer the question of WHY that fact is a fact. You're supposed to just accept that fact, because it is simply the way things are.
