Why are some colors like negro/negra, rosado/rosada , marrono/morrona have genders and others do not? Or is it only some colors have female counterparts? Also, some texts show day/ dia as male and afternoon/evening/tardes and night/noches as female, but other texts show all three as male? Which is right buenos noches or buenas noches ; if latter, why or should I just grin and bear it.
Some colors end in a/o vowels. Like rojo. anaranjado. amarillo. The endings of these words can be changed between masculine and feminine. But other colors end in consonants, or the letter e, like azul, and verde. These words stay the same, whether the noun is masculine or feminine. Azul is always azul. Verde is always verde. Dia is really always a masculine noun. It's always EL dia, never la dia. Tarde is feminine. LA tarde. Noche is feminine. LA noche. I have never heard or seen all three of those as masculine, anywhere. So, since "noche" is feminine (LA noche), then which one is right? BUENOS noches? Or BUENAS noches?
Gracias, señor Avery, for the explanation of the why on the colors...makes sense I will have to look up the text book names, but here is a website which says buenos noches instead of buenas notches: http://www.smartphrase.com/Spanish/sp_general_words_phr.shtml
Now how do I give you a medallion? :)
I'm glad to help! This website you showed me, yeah it's very strange, I've never ever seen or heard someone say buenos noches. You're in a spanish class right? You could bring that up with your teacher. I'm very curious. I've been looking around, trying to find out if buenos noches could be grammatically correct in any circumstances, but no luck.
that's because it's not.... you can not say "buenos noches" it's just wrong... it could be that some automatic translator such as google translator makes some mistakes of this kind...
Thank you. I agree about the auto translate part. Sounds like someone was lazy at : http://www.smartphrase.com/Spanish/sp_general_words_phr.shtml
