does anybody know significance of electric field?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

significance ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

physical significance???

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the electric field at a point will determine the force on a charged particle at this point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

force can be determined simply by coloumbs law...then why electric field????

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the gravity field determine the force on particles with mass the electric field determines the force on charged particles

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

coulombs law is similar to the electric field equation, use the field equation when the main source of the electric field is a single charged point and the other charge is minuscule in comparison,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

field equation came from coloumbs law

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

yes,

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the field exists at every point,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then y electric field eqation, why not coloumbs law?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

One way to think of the electric field is as the *potentiality* of the electric force acting. This sense follows immediately from the definition, as the electric field is defined as what the electric force would be acting on a unit charge. It will turn out in electromagnetism to be extremely useful to be able to talk about both the electric and magnetic fields without worrying about how they are acting on individual charges.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

electric filed is not derived from electric force electric force is derived electric field but we r told the other way round to make understanding easier. field is a concept cannot be visualised physically but it effects are felt

OpenStudy (jamesj):

I think it's very unlikely your last comment has helped the questioner; I am pretty sure I am right, just look at any standard text; but in any case, this intuitive sense of what E is is very helpful.
