Go to the library or your Kindle store and find Russell Baker's autobiography "Growing Up." It won the Pulitzer Prize many years ago, and is exactly what you want. It describes what it was like for him growing up in the 1930s (he was born in 1925), and it was written late in his life, in the 1980s I believe. It is very personal, engaging, and very well written.
