Use Wikipedia for this and cross reference the details from other websites. Build a gradual portfolio in your mind of the characters using the minute details (and of course, the obvious ones) included in some sources which are excluded in other sources. That is, find the tiny details and embed them in your summary of the character. This is an illusion of understanding from the book rather than various web sources. (However, I would argue that this type of understanding is nearly equivalent to the book understanding.)
