Plz help! D: i don't understand this one bit Questions 14-16: Use this triangle to calculate the specified trigonometric values. http://is.byu.edu/courses/hs/GEOM-043-101/secure/imgs/math10-929.gif 14.Calculate sin a. 7 over square root of 13 b. 6 over square root of 13 c. 6 over square root of 85 d. 7 over square root of 85 15.Calculate cos a. 7 over square root of 13 b. 6 over square root of 13 c. 6 over square root of 85 d. 7 over square root of 85 16.Calculate tan a. 7 over square root of 13 b. 6 over square root of 13 c. 6 over square root of 85 d. 7 over square root of 85

7/sqrt13 is what you plug into your calculator. then do it for all of them

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Use Pythagorus to calculate the length of the hypotenuse of this triangle. Then use trigonometry to calculate the values of sin, cos and tan of the indicated angle. You might find this site useful if you want to brush up on trig: http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/trigonometry.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried and i still dont dont know how -_-

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

use the link I gave you to learn about how to do these types of problems. then post the steps you have attempted in trying to solve this and we will help you in the specific areas where you are having problems.

OpenStudy (ledah):

do you have a scientific calculator or graphing calculator?

OpenStudy (ledah):

either of those tools may help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont actually that is one of the reasons i cant do it

OpenStudy (ledah):

Hmm.. do you have a book then that may help you..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is all online

OpenStudy (ledah):

ah.. that does make it much harder.. :l

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya ur telling me and none of my family gets this either

OpenStudy (ledah):

Sin was the most difficult to learn online.. I don't even think I'll be much use.. :c I'm sorry..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its okay thanks for trying though

OpenStudy (ledah):

If you ever need my help for anything else I'll be glad to try.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you still confused?

OpenStudy (phi):

This will help http://www.khanacademy.org/math/trigonometry/v/basic-trigonometry This question 14 is asking you to find the sin of theta (labeled in the triangle) you do not need a calculator. The video is short and pretty good.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after watching the video i started to understand but then got more confused -_-

hero (hero):

Ask pythagoras

OpenStudy (phi):

watch the one after it also.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@pythagoras , please help...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the first thing you do when you see an angle with two sides given like in your triangle, u immediately use your Pythagoras theorem to find the other side. this means you use this equation: \[a^2 +b^2=c^2\] c= the side of the triangle that is opposite to the 90 deg angle. so c in your triangle is the side that has no number. a and b in the equation are the other sides of the triangle... it does not matter which of those two sides you call a and which you call b as long as c is always named as the side opposite to the 90 deg angle. soooo.... in your example to find c.... you do this... 7^2 + 6^2=c^2.... which is 49+36=c^2... which is 85=c^2......to get rid of the square on the c you need to square root both sides... soo \\[\sqrt{85}=\sqrt{c^2}\]....therefore \[c=\sqrt{85}\]... so now you have all three sides... understand so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so far im understanding it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh my sole just typed an essay and computer froze:'( sorry ill type again just gimme a min...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay now that you have all your sides you can answer your questions. to answer you questions, you fisrt have to understand what sin cos and tan are... sin=O/H... cos =A/H.. and tan = O/A.... H is very similar to c.. H is always equal to the number that is opposite the 90deg angle... therefore H=c= \[\sqrt{85}\] O stands for opposite. O is always the number opposite to the indicated angle that is NOT 90deg. this means that in your triangle.. O=7 because O equals the number opposite to the indicated angle that is not 90deg and that number is 7. the indicated angle in your triangle is the greek letter theta... but that doesnt matter.. just as long as you recognize that theta is an indicated angle. A is the number that is not occupied on your triangle after you have assigned places for H and O. this means that in your triangle , A=6. sooo... going back to sin=O/H... cos=A/H .. and tan=O/A in question 14 they ask you to calculate sin. all they want you to do is find what O/H is equal to... now seeing as we said O=7 in your triangle and H=squareroot85.... then\[\sin =7/\sqrt{85}\] which is option d. if you draw all the details that i gave you on your triangle, can you then try and tell me the answers to 15 and 16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you following?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this has been the most helpful info i have gotten so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a pleasure... but question 16 is bogous... its completely wrong.. the answer should be 7/6. and that answer is not an option so either you got given the wrong info or you might have typed it in wrong but im 100% sure that the tan of that triangle =7/6... just letting you know so you dont get frustrated by Q 16 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya i think i might have typed it wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahahaha we all make mistakes , no biggie :) as long as you learned something and not still unsure :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well im glad i understand the sin, cos, and tan thingy now XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so am i coz that was a lot of typing haha :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I KNOW I WAS LIKE ARE THEY TYPING ME A LETTER? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha.... felt like it hahaha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ikr ^_^ but it was helpful and kinda funny in a way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im glad :)
