a photo is 3 inches longer that it is wide.a 2 inch border is placed around the photo making the total area of the photo making the total area of the photo and border 108in^2 . What are the dimensions of the photo?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Set up a quadratic. 108 = (x + 5)(x + 2) Then once you get x, plug it into x and x + 2 to get the dimensions.

i am confused with the 3 inches longer part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1340760349325:dw| so lets put it like this the length is the width plus 3. width= w so L=W+3 and the border is 2 inches wide, so that means that the borders length is L=w+3+2 so L=W+5 and the width is w=w+2 get it so far? and they want you to find the dimensions of the photo. if 108 is the area of the border then : 108 = L x W (right?) so then 108 = ( W+5)(w+2) can you find what w is? once you find what w is, you can plug it into this: L=W+3 and find out what L is. then you have the dimensions of the photo, just as they asked.
