convert a normal distribution score of 80 with a mean of 70 and a standard deviation of 6 into a z score

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A z-score of one would be one standard deviation above the mean. It looks like 80 is about 1.67 standard deviation above the mean. z=1.67

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there anyway you could show me how you got that solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sigma is the standard deviation, so sigma =6. 80-70 is ten, which is the difference between the score and the mean. 10 = 1.67*6=1.67sigma (of course, this is rounded off). The number of standard deviations from the mean is the z score. 80 is bigger than the mean, so the z score is positive. That gives z=1.67

Got that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i do thank you so much :)
