how come sometimes it says how many replies there are in a certain question, sometimes it doesnt? i mean when do they appear?

Uh, to the best of my knowledge it should never display the reply count. I mean, the data is in the markup - but we hide it due to space limitations. Can you show me what you're seeing?

oh. i was only seeing it before. now i dont see it anymore. that was why i was asking. i was wondering why it was gone. so it's permanent now? we cant see it anymore?

Yeah. I didn't make the change but it was probably something that Sid dictated based on not having enough space in that question list.
